Producer Salaam Remi discussed the song's conception: "We actually were working on a song for Fasten Lee'due south Clockers movie that really, that vocal never came out. So we had a song that nosotros did for Clockers, and and then during that session, Wyclef was similar, 'Yo, play that beat yous did for Fat Joe!' And Lauryn was similar, 'Yo, play the Fat Joe beat' and and so when I played information technology, Clef jumped upward and spit the commencement verse to 'Fu-Gee-La.' He had the poesy, but information technology just vicious all together and and so nosotros worked on it. That song was really washed prior to The Score, so a lot of The Score's vibe was based around what that vocal was."[iv]
